The Job - When the owner of this 90s' Fender® Telecaster brought his guitar in for a check-up, we thought all it needed was a rewiring job, or a new toggle switch. Upon further inspection, the chrome cover on the neck pick-up was loose and DC resistence from the neck pick-up yield no readings. We had an unplesant feeling that we would have to re-wind the neck pick-up. After removing the cover, our fears were confirmed.

We hoped to salvage part of the coils but it looks like we have to re-wind the entire pickup because the coils were badly frayed.
In this picture, you can see the process of unwinding the pickup, which is equally tedious as rewinding it.

Here's a picture of the flatwork and magnets with the leads cut off. The remaining lead will be unsoldered.

Copper wire is finer than a strand of hair, and we had to loop it around the eyelet several times before soldering.

This is a nifty little set-up we created to wind pickups. No sewing machine motors or pedals, just pure hand winding, and that all important scatter-wound mojo too.

Sodlering the 42 AWG copper wires is harder than what it looks like in this pictorial due to the sheer fact that copper wires are super fine and tend to break easily!

We wrapped the coils with cloth tape to protect it from breakage.

Potting the pickup with 80/20 paraffin and beeswax to prevent microphonics.

The pick-up is almost ready for installation... We're just waiting for the wax to dry.
